Intro - This has been so much fun and also so many late nights. This project was done by my partner (@wolferaven) and myself, over 6 days. We worked with Unity3D which we are fairly new to. I want to share some of the technicalities with the project here.
Server - The server programming was challenging, specially with limited PHP and MySql experience. Behind the scenes the game communicates quite a bit with the server, once a bottle is picked up it sends a request for a message thread, which will be “checked out” on the server so no other player can get that same message while it’s potentially up for editing. The check out expires after 30 minutes, or will be check back in if the user “Throws the bottle away” or “Post they’re story”. This way two people can’t write part 2 of a story at the same time.
Orthello2D - A 2D Framework for Unity3D. This framework simplifies a lot of things but for the price of a lot of complexity. I used it for a few things in the game, creating gradients, placing static art. Just input a sprite file instead of creating a material for each sprite and it gives a lot of control that a 2D game needs. Unfortunately for this short project, a lot of Orthello was too confusing and didn’t have time to learn it, that I had to make my own solutions. It does mix well with anything, so 50/50 solution worked out for us.
Interface - The interface was quite a core part in this game, it’s the first time I’ve done a proper interface in Unity. It was rushed, it is messy and would like to improve it for the future. Seems like a lot of users was confused with it, and I understand them. These things need user testing.
Bugs - There is a lot of bugs in the game, but no game breaking bugs (as far as I know). There is plenty of spelling errors, interface can be messed up easily if you try hard enough and it’s a prototype.
